What Are The Benefits Of Installing Solar Panels?

Save money with solar panels

Installing a commercial solar panel or battery storage system installation will significantly reduce your organisations energy usage and spend. These solar savings can be used to invest more money into growing your business further.

Reduce your carbon footprint

As energy demands increase through the rise of digitalisation, sustainable business strategies are a global focus. As Solar energy is renewable and carbon neutral, by installing commercial solar panels you will lower your business's carbon footprint. Installing solar is a great way to do your part for climate change.

Energy Independence

As energy prices continue to fluctuate, installing solar panels or battery storage to your business will protect your business from shock energy rates. As a result, your company will become less reliant on the National Grid and more reliant on the sun or give you the ability to buy and store energy when its cheapest.

Commercial Solar Panel Installation Process

  • Solar Panels for Government and schools

Your organisation is the most important part of this process. During this step will will find out what you are looking to achieve, your current energy usage and how much you are looking to invest in your solar panel system. We will explain how the system works as well as the different types of solar panel and battery storage systems that are available.

  • Commercial solar panels

We can do this in person or remotely by external visit using google earth and photos. During this part of our process we are looking to fully understand everything about your property, particularly the construction materials and methods of the roof elements. We will identify the optimum position, type and number of solar panels.

  • Based on everything we have discovered about you and your organisation we will recommend the most suitable solar panel and battery storage system. It will illustrate the total cost, installation time and the potential savings that could be made. We will also show you why we have chosen the system and offer alternative specifications based on cost or performance.

  • If you are happy to proceed we will complete our final checks. We may need to visit the property again to complete a structural report that identifies roof loadings, suitability of fixings, the best location for the inverter or battery packs, as well as checking the health of your current electricity setup.

Next, we will arrange a booking date and order the scaffolding and chosen components.

  • We will erect the scaffolding a few days before we start installation and complete our safety checks. Installation can take between 3-5 days depending on the size and complexity and we will update you at the end of each day. Our work is completed in line with Part A of the Buildings Regulations and Part P Electrical Compliance for the new AC circuit wired to the solar inverter.

  • Before leaving your premises we will ensure your solar installation is safe against the elements including leaks from water. We will provide you with instructions on how to use and monitor your systems and what to do if there is an emergency. Next we will register your system with the grid and identify the current best provider for the Smart Export Guarantee. We will issue you with the Manufacturers product guarantee and our work comes with an insurance backed 5 year guarantee.

 FAQs

  • No, from the 1 April 2022 till the 1 April 2027, Solar Systems, their linked components and fitting are zero rate for VAT.

  • There is no minimum or maximum number of panels that you should have. It really depends on the available space that you have on the roof of your building or on the ground for a ground-mounted system, the amount of energy that you use and when you are home. We will make a recommendation for a solar system that meets your needs and maximises your investment.

  • There is no maximum amount of solar panels that you can have. If the total capacity of the solar panels exceeds 3.68kwh we will have to let the district network operator DNO know and either seek permission for a larger array or limit the amount of energy that you feed back to the grid to 3.68kwh. We will deal with this for you as part of our fitting process.

  • Solar batteries are designed to power your home at night. They are not the right choice for everyone and it depends on your energy usage. They are expensive but offer great savings to certain users. The size of the battery will depend on how many units you use per hour. If you use 1kw per hour then a 5KW battery will last around 5 hours.

  • Modern solar panels work reasonably well in cloudy weather, even though the light on cloudy days isn't as strong. Surprisingly, rain can even make solar panels work better by washing away any dust or dirt that might block light.

  • Multiple factors go into determining what a solar panel installation costs. Factors include the number of solar panels you install, the components required to install the system, total time taken and labour costs and electrical work that is needed.

  • A solar installation is expected to last around 25 years. Different parts of the system come with different warranty lengths. Typically solar panels are guaranteed for 25 years, solar inverters and batteries for 10 years and the rails and fixings for 15 years. We offer a 2 year guarantee on our workmanship and will support you in any warranty claim with the manufacturer.

  • Our fitting process is generally 2-3 days depending on the size and complexity of your installation. We try to limit the time the scaffolding is in place to 5-7 days and provide full training to you on how the system works as part of our handover. We offer telephone support to you after completion, which is included in the price.

  • Yes, there are a number of intelligent smart EV chargers that we can link to your solar panels which will maximise the energy you produce from your solar system and charge your electric car throughout the day.

  • Yes, we can connect a smart hot water switch to your solar panels which will monitor your hot water cylinder and keep it at the optimum temperature. This will save money on your gas or electricity bill.

  • Solar storage batteries are the most expensive part of any solar installation. They come in different sizes and most come with a battery optimising unit that monitors battery health and delivers a charge in the best way to prolong the life of the unit. A general rule of thumb for cost is £500 per kwh of storage. For example if you bought a 5 kwh battery this would cost in the region of £2,500.

  • The best place to put solar panels is on a roof that faces south that doesn’t have anything near the panels that will shade the panels during use. During our visit we will calculate the optimum roof site at your property to place the panels on.

  • A solar inverter works by taking in the variable direct current, or 'DC' output, from your solar panels and transforming it into alternating 240V current, or 'AC' output. The appliances in your home run on AC, not DC, which is why the solar inverter must change the DC output that is collected by your solar panels.

  • An investment in solar panels will reduce your monthly electricity bill. The amount you save will depend on lots of factors, including when you are at home, the size and direction of your roof and whether you charge an electric car at home. We will design a solar panel system to maximise your return and pay back in the quickest time based on your use. Typically a system takes around 12-17 years to pay back based on an energy price of 20p kwh. With the cap on energy prices going up in October of 2022 we expect the payback times to reduce to 10-15 years.

  • Yes we advise protecting the outside areas of your solar panels from birds and squirrels. We include this as standard on all our solar installations.

  • Solar is proving very popular at the moment due to rising energy prices and manufacturers struggling to keep up with demand. Typically, there is a 4-6 week wait from placing your order to installation. At the time of order we will order your system and book an exact fitting date with you.

  • From the 1 April 2022 till the 1 April 2027, Solar Systems, their linked components and fitting are zero rate for VAT. So if you have solar battery storage installed at the same time as your solar panels no. If you install at a later date then yes.

  • Yes, we recommend that you speak to your energy supplier before installation and arrange to have your standard electricity meter switched to a smart meter.

  • In-roof systems do look very nice. Typically they are installed on new build properties that have 3-4 panels. They can be retrofitted to existing properties by removing some of the existing roof tiles. In-roof systems do require more roof space than on-roof systems and take longer to fit. We will discuss both options with you and work out which option is right for you.
